Although, the topics I mentioned are
important, a hug plan to me is the most important because it directly affects
your baby's well being. Studies show that
skin to skin contact with a newborn benefits both their health and development
as they adapt to life outside of the womb.
Skin to skin contact with your baby is paramount. All this means is
hugging and holding your infant clothed only in a diaper against your bare
chest for hours at a time. This can be
done by both moms and dads, creating a special bond and time with the little
one. Some of the additional benefits are it helps to regulate temperature,
improve sleep, and foster weight gain.
My husband and I completed the Hug Plan
together which was pretty easy and quick. The plan helped us map out our skin-to-skin
preferences the day of delivery to make sure the baby gets adequate hug time
immediately after birth. I personally want to hold her as soon as she is delivered. If I can’t provide immediate skin to skin contact I would like my
husband to be the alternate hugger.
Huggies®
has an initiative called No Baby Unhugged®, which aims to help ensure all babies,
especially those in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) receive
much-needed physical human interaction should circumstances prevent a parent
from being at their side. This is done by using specialized volunteers who sit
and cuddle with infants in the NICU. To
see the list of all the benefits of skin to skin contact and why the hug plan
is critical to a baby’s development, please visit the Huggies®No Baby Unhugged site. While you’re there you can also download and
create your very own Hug Plan!
When you sign up to pledge your support for
the program, you’ll receive a free pack of Huggies® diapers and natural care wipes. Also,
Huggies® Brand will donate $5 to the No Baby Unhugged® initiative in Canada, so
there's really no reason not to sign up!
Lastly, you can also help by sharing this video about the latest No Baby Unhugged®
launch at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital, because for every share on
Facebook, Huggies® Brand will donate $1 to hugging programs in Canada.
